Released for Saiyan Day 2024!

This fanzine is a fan-based parody. Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball GT, and Dragon Ball Super are all owned by FUNimation, Toei Animation, Shueisha and Akira Toriyama. Please support the official releases.

This zine was not supposed to be a memorial!! About two weeks before Saiyan Day 2024, we lost the creator of Dragon Ball Z, Akira Toriyama. A group of UK artists got together to create a DBZine, and now we are commemorating this sad event together via this zine. I’m distributing this zine containing our artwork inspired by his characters and stories. Though we are upset to have to commemorate Toriyama’s legacy in this sad coincidence, we hope you like what we have made.

What is “Saiyan Day”?
Saiyan Day (“Saiya no Hi”), also known as 318 Day (“San-Ichi-Hachi no Hi”) is a special day, created by Dragon Ball fans, to celebrate on 18th March. This is because, when shortening “San-Ichi-Hachi” (3-1-8), it sounds a bit like “Saiyan” in Japanese. Goku from DBZ is Saiyan!

What is a ‘zine?
A zine (/ziːn/ ZEEN; short for magazine or fanzine) is a small-circulation self-published work of original or appropriated texts and images, usually reproduced via a copy machine. Zines are the product of either a single person or of a very small group, and are popularly photocopied into physical prints for circulation. A fanzine (blend of fan and magazine) is a non-professional and non-official publication produced by enthusiasts of a particular cultural phenomenon (such as a literary or musical genre) for the pleasure of others who share their interest. The term was coined in an October 1940 science fiction fanzine by Russ Chauvenet and popularized within science fiction fandom, entering the Oxford English Dictionary in 1949.
